FLESHXFUR (John Welch) told no one what he was up to. He artfully planned his 2018 emergence onto the Canadian rap scene in private, stacking an arsenal of tracks, videos and crafting his brand and raw talent before unleashing his work to unsuspecting ears.
That was part 1 — get them hooked. Part 2 was showing his audience that this was no one-off. FLESHXFUR became the first and only Canadian to win 5 consecutive demo battles on Shade 45 XM. After that he won another competition, Starbars, with hundreds of nationwide entries, affirming his newfound lyrical ability in the Canadian underground rap scene. All this came within a year of his first album release, Effy LP which landed him a spot on the Canadian Underdogs top 5 albums of 2018.
Born in Brampton Ont., John became enamoured with canines and at the age of 12 volunteered at a local wildlife sanctuary helping to care for wolves and coyotes. This passion has continued throughout his life and, in part led to his success as a fully realized artist with a deeply rooted connection to animal activism.
Today, FLESHXFUR, still owns and operates his successful business, Wag K9 Co. off-leash adventure hikes for dogs on Vancouver Island, BC, and is sought after in his community due to his profound ability to connect with animals. His music and aesthetic are a fierce yet refined reflection of his love for canines and are masterfully woven throughout his lyrics, creating a subtle nod to his lifelong passion.
FLESHXFUR's quick succession to prominence on the West Coast sends the East Coast a signal that he’s coming and primed to deliver his talents from coast-to-coast. His next album, Hackles, is complete and scheduled to release June 18th, 2020. He is currently UNSIGNED
